The Living Stairs of Stone: Mammoth Hot Springs Unfolded
Mammoth Hot Springs – springtime trip through Yellowstone National Park:
A great day in Yellowstone: we saw more bears than we can count (from mammoth to tower FYI), bison, elk, antelope, cranes, geese, ducks, osprey, raven (and more bears) at least 5, Kristen thinks she saw 6. Of course I was the driver so I couldn’t get the best pics. I think y’all know I like the trees better anyway. So grateful to spend the day with my family.
These geological features are amazing; I love seeing what the land can create; and how the Earth bubbles up with the freedom of creation; to become anything and everything all at once. The Yellowstone Ecosystem is exciting and dynamic; in constant motion and ready for the next adventure. It’s so vibrant, you can feel it through your skin.
Mammoth Hot Springs is a striking geological wonder in Yellowstone National Park, where steaming terraces of travertine cascade down a hillside like frozen waterfalls sculpted in stone. Formed by hot water rising through limestone, the springs deposit calcium carbonate in intricate, ever-changing patterns. The result is a landscape of stark whites, vibrant oranges, and mossy greens, shaped by both heat and time. Boardwalks weave through the terraces, allowing visitors to wander amid steaming vents, delicate mineral formations, and the occasional bison ambling past. It’s not just a feast for the eyes—it’s a living testament to Yellowstone’s restless geothermal spirit.
